Brand Identity Book Design Menu

Melo Eatery is an up-and-coming culinary spot in Calgary that brings a fresh, intentional approach to casual dining. True to its name, which comes from the French phrase méli-mélo meaning a playful mix or assortment, the restaurant focuses on unpretentious, approachable menus that blend high-quality, seasonal ingredients with clean, contemporary flavours.

The space itself is designed with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Stripping away the clutter, the interior relies on sleek lines, neutral tones, and warm, natural lighting to create a calm, uncluttered atmosphere. It is an environment where the design intentionally takes a backseat, allowing the energy of the room and the artistry on the plate to become the main focus.

What makes Melo Eatery such a compelling addition to a brand portfolio is the harmony between its space and its philosophy. By rejecting the stuffiness often associated with high-end dining, they have created a welcoming neighbourhood hub where the design is understated, the service is human, and the food speaks completely for itself.

This project was quick and highly enjoyable. The brief was to design both a main menu and a drinks menu that would look great on the restaurant's tables, while also scaling up beautifully as large displays outside to catch the eyes of passersby. The restaurant itself features a very modern, minimalist style of cuisine, and I wanted the design to reflect that exact same energy. My main focus was highlighting their farm-to-table concept, using clean typography and spacious layouts to mirror the fresh, natural, and locally sourced ingredients that make their menu so special.

I built the visual elements in Illustrator, keeping the focus entirely on the restaurant’s natural, farm-to-table message. The layout is intentionally simple so guests can navigate the dishes easily, while the clean aesthetic naturally matches the modern, minimalist environment of the eatery. Alongside the main menus, I also developed a concept for a restaurant cookbook, designed to feature favorite recipes from past seasons. For this, I put together a spread showing how the layout could adapt beautifully depending on the length of the recipe and the size of the food photography they might want to use.
