Design Talks

Design Talks is a conference on which is hosted at the University of Calgary by Great West Designs. This two-day event brings in multiple keynote speakers to discuss different design industries. Anywhere from illustration workshops to magazine editors, talking about the ins and outs of our ever-growing, adapting and changing design world.

I was tasked with designing and laying out the conference program. The specs required a one-page booklet with a front and back cover, sponsorships, and clear instructions on time, location, speaker, and descriptions across the two days.

The crucial aspect of this design was that it was a class project that required the design to be done in a day's work (eight hours), this time frame was designed to put us under pressure and solve problems quickly and effectively. As a result the product produced was well sought after and received a small critique.

Design Process

The design concept aims to create a modern brochure while adhering to two key principles. The first principle was to ensure readability; integrating large amounts of body text on the inner two pages posed a challenge in fitting everything within the design specifications.

Additionally, it was important to maintain consistency across both pages, with precise alignment of lines and text. The result is a simple yet effective design that the client appreciated, focusing primarily on the text while featuring subtle design elements that enhance the overall presentation.
